EXCERPT: DEADLY SINS

I sat in the darkened corner booth watching Lyssa as she leaned provocatively across the bar, her creamy breasts bulging above the tiny halter-top she wore pasted to her skin. Red and blue neon lights from the beer sign in Uncle Charlie's Bar flashed across her face, keeping time with her changing moods. My breath caught as I thought of the smiles she sometimes flashed at me from across the room. Sometimes she'd even call me by name. God, she was gorgeous with those slanted green eyes cloaked mysteriously behind lashes black as licorice. My heart raced every time I looked at her.

My hands clutched the empty beer can in excitement as I pretended to drink. Uncle said I had'ta look like a regular but my hands felt dirty just touching the foul smelling can. Hastily I pulled them away, reaching for the thin silver chain hidden beneath the open collar of my shirt to the crucifix resting warm against my skin. It was a constant reminder of my faith and I repeated the Ten Commandments over and over again in my mind. But the present kept intruding and I fell to thinking about my uncle again.

A year with Uncle Charlie was one year too long. Too bad he had been the only relative I could live with after Mom and Pop's car accident. I still found New York overwhelming, a big change for a small town Catholic guy.

My eyes started shifting, fast-like, the way they always did when I thought too much about the past. My hands started shaking and I shoved my fist into my back pocket, checking to be sure the ID card Uncle Charlie gave me was still there. His gruff voice echoed in my head, "Tony boy, I can't afford to lose my license 'case someone comes snoopin'. Understand? I gotta keep an eye on ya an' I can't do that if ya ain't here with me. Savvy, boy? An' stay outta trouble." He'd rapped me smartly on the side of the head. "Look at me when I'm speakin' kid."

I shifted my eyes back to Lyssa, thinking how someday I would save her, take her from this scurvy place. For weeks I'd watched from the sidelines while the would-be Romeo's clustered around her, fumbling for a quick feel. And she performed for them like a big-time movie star, flirting, teasing, making each guy think he would be the lucky one tonight. I could be glued to her side and she wouldn't notice me.

Still I ached to hold that voluptuous body against me, run my fingers through the lustrous black hair I imagined would smell of wild honeysuckle's, to feel her soft breath against my neck as I made love to her with all the passion of a seventeen-year-old Italian boy in love with a dream.
