HOW TO MAKE A COIL BOWL
How would you like to make a coil bowl? Its not as hard as you
think.
I'll show
you how. Follow the steps below.
1. First you get a piece of clay and wedge it. The reason why you
wedge it is to remove the air bubbles. Air bubbles weakens the clay
and when the bowl starts to dry, it will crack during drying or firing.
2. Next, line a bowl with cloth so the clay doesn't stick.
Take a piece of clay and roll it into a ball between your hands. Make the clay
1/4" thick and about 2"inches in diameter.
3. Take another piece of clay and roll it into a hotdog shape with the
tips of your fingers. Lay the coil around the slab in the bottom of the
bowl. Keep making coils and adding them around the edge of the bowl until
you reach the top.
4. Let the bowl dry for two weeks and then bisque fire it. Glaze the bowl
and fire it again. This will put a glass finish on the surface of the bowl.
Be sure to use a lead free glaze if you want to eat out of it.
