THE WANDERER
Did you ever have an urge
to sail a distant sea,
to see the bongo warriors
sitting down to jungle tea?
Did you ever get a feeling
more intense than ever known,
to dance the hula barefoot,
gaze upon the dessert blown?
To be in Scottish moorlands,
to smell the heather there,
and feel the misty breezes
float away the plucking care?
To see the Finnish coastline,
a lonely tide to quell,
where emotions, like the waters
seem to flourish, wan, and swell?
I long to flee from life awhile,
the knowing of everyday.
So fleet, the challenge, the unknown,
too soon-it's gone away.
And so I sit here tied by chains
of life and love and home,
content until some still dark night
commands the urge to roam. |
IT WAS WORTH IT ALL
My daddy, don't you know of a long time ago,
tis a sweet and fond memory I tell,
Of a wee little home without any grass
but my thoughts forever there dwell.
That gray little house with proverbial mouse,
though bare and bedraggled it stood,
was a haven within, for our clothing was thin
and the fire from the old stove felt good
And summers were free, as Bonnie and me
danced with the fireflies at night
out on the lawn, with the stars far beyond,
we felt surely life was just right.
And our joy was complete when the family would meet
round the old oak table each night,
mid popcorn and pranks, not to mention some spanks,
the radio made our life bright.
There was never a smell, I remember it well,
As sweet as our roses to me,
and the soft little chick we each got to pick
and raise, was a wonder to see.
Don't say that they're gone, these days in the past,
for they're still very real to me.
Oh God, when I die, give me that home up on high.
How sweet, oh how sweet, my heaven will be.
