Central Elementary is fortunate to have a networked computer in every classroom and department. We also offer students a fully staffed library complete with a computer lab. Every classroom and department has access to curriculum support software, a school database, and the Internet through a networked computer system.
Reading and Math curriculum are enhanced with the Accelerated Reader and Accelerated Math programs.

The students at Central Elementary School participate in the Accelerated Reader program. This program allows a child to choose a library book on his/her reading level, read it, and then take a test on the computer.
A child's reading level is determined by a nationally normed test taken on the STAR computer program. Most children are tested at the beginning of the school year, at midyear, and again at the end of the year to assess growth and to adjust reading levels.
Students read to reach individualized yearly goals. These goals are based on the child's reading level.
To encourage participation in AR teachers give prizes when a certain percent of the yearly goal is met or have monthly parties for students who are on track for their yearly goal. Another incentive this past year was for Terry McClure, Burden Marshall, to come eat lunch with the students who were on track with their goals.
Central Elementary's Library currently has 3,782 books with tests on Accelerated Reader for students to choose. We find this a very successful program for our young readers.

Students in Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grades use the Accelerated Math computer program to practice math skills. Students work at their own pace to complete objectives assigned to them. The computer generates worksheets that students complete and answer on scan cards. They scan their work through a scanner and a report is printed immediately to let students know how they have done. Once students are tested and have mastered assigned skills new objectives are then given to be worked on. A computer grade book lets the teacher and the student know how well they are doing and what objectives have been mastered.
