Teens Against Drugs Provide Opportunities, Leadership, Education Support

Central Elementary School has an active "Safe and Drug Free Schools" Team who sponsors two very special Sixth Graders each year.  These students educate their peers, our staff and local community members on how to live healthy lifestyles without drug and alcohol use.

The "Safe and Drug Free Schools" Task Force purchased four "Here's Looking At You 2000" curriculum kits.  The kits are currently being used in the Kindergarten, First, Second, Fourth and Sixth grades.  These kits help students learn to make smart choices while building the self-confidence needed to make those decisions.

We also teach "Let's Get Real About Violence" curriculum in Grades 3 and 5.  These kits will help young children learn to make the correct choices when confronted with conflict.

And, we use "Project Wisdom", a character education curriculum that our Sixth graders will read over the intercom.

Adult sponsors at the Central Elementary are Gaye Mackey and Judy Shore

Great American Smoke-Out

Central Elementary’s TADPOLES, Saydi and Austin, surprised their schoolmates with new pencils for the Great American Smoke-Out on Thursday, November 19th. Each pencil had a No Smoking slogan on it to help encourage all students to stay healthy and not use tobacco products.

Saydi and Austin also read an anti-smoking morning announcement and passed out Smarties candies as the students left for the day. The Smarties had the label, “Be Smart, Don’t Start!”

Red Ribbon Week

Central Elementary celebrated Red Ribbon Week, October 26th through 29. Each student at Central received a numbered red ribbon to wear every day. Saydi and Austin drew numbers twice each day for cool prizes such as Hacky Sacs, bracelets, and pens with anti-drug slogans. They also read informative announcements every morning about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. Treats were passed out at the end of each day. On Monday, their popcorn balls said, "Pop, Pop, POP! STOP THE DRUGS!". Tuesday's Laffy Taffy said, "Drugs Are No Laughing Matter!". Other treats included Pixie Stix with the slogan, "Drugs Are No Treat" and Sweet Tarts. The TADPOLES also gave their peers stickers with an anti-drug slogan on them. On Thursday, each child in the building received a Trick or Treat bag with anti-drug activities listed on it.

Saydi and Austin sent a drug-free message to every person, who had a Central School District email account, requesting they send it on to everyone they knew. In less than two weeks we received over 75 responses from 17 states and all the continents except Antarctica. Friends, old and new, returned our emails from Shanghai, China; Frauenburg, Germany, Santiago, Chile; Panama City, Panama; Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; Greece and Madrid, Spain. The answer traveling the farthest came from Victoria, Australia.

Each class also created a banner that was displayed in the common's area. Using Halloween as a theme the banners creatively displayed an anti-drug message. Steve Mackey judged the banners and the winning classes received Blow Pops with cards stating "Better Things to Do Than Drugs" ideas.

Mrs. Kill's Kindergartners won First Prize in the Banner contest.

Mrs. Liebau's First Graders won 2nd prize.

Also participating were the following classes:

Mrs. Roe's Second Grade and Mrs. Clower's Third Grade

Mrs. Pippit's 4th Grade

Mrs. Powell's 5th Grade

Mrs. Ashenfelter's 6th Grade
