AVAILABLE FOOD ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS FOR EASTERN COWLEY COUNTY

1. Free Food in Cowley County – The Emergency Food Assistance Program, a USDA designed program to supplement diets of low-income Americans, administered by SRS. In order to qualify you must:


1. Reside in Kansas
2. Apply in County of eligibility
3. Sign a declaration of eligibility
4. Provide income and household size information and provide verification if requested.

2. Commodity Supplemental Food Program through United Methodist Urban Ministry of Wichita, Inc.
A monthly food box program for income eligible postpartum women for one year, pregnant women, and children from birth to the month they turn six years old who do not receive WIC, and elders age 60+. This program food is provided by USDA through the State of Kansas and includes canned juice, fruit, vegetables, milk and meat, peanut butter or dry beans, cereal, macaroni or rice and 2# of cheese for each family member who qualifies by age and income. It is available in Sedgwick and the nine surrounding counties. Women and children are qualified at 185% of Federal poverty level ($2,984 gross monthly income for a family of four); elders qualify at 130% of the Federal poverty level ($1,390 gross monthly income for two in the household).


3. Emergency Food Bank – Joseph’s Storehouse, Provider
Emergency food is available to those with temporary needs. We recognize that life may have times when help is needed. We try to have a variety of basic foods. SOS is able to respond quickly until a long-term solution may be found. We thank all who donate food or money for this program.
Contact Joseph’s Storehouse at 620-438-2497 or go by the store at 424 Main, Burden, Kansas and visit with Louise Stevenson, Sherri Wheat, or Beverly Crow. The store is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., and Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon.


4. ECCRC Food Programs

ECCRC offers an annual Thanksgiving Food Box to area families each year. This is a complete Thanksgiving dinner. We also have a foodbank that is open every day. ECCRC is located at 408 Hwy. 160 in Burden.
