Success for All
SFA?
Success For All? What happened to Dick and Jane from when I was in
school?
Those are questions we hear frequently from new parents in our district.
Success For All (SFA) is a research-based reading program. It is structured
so that each student is taught reading at their instructional level. The
reading groups are divided by reading ability. Not every 3rd grader reads
at a third grade level, some are higher, some are lower. SFA addresses that
issue by multi-age grouping.
There are four stages in Success For All. Children in the Preschool program
are involved in Curiosity Corner. The kindergarten program is called
KinderCorner. Both of these programs utilize the entire school day. 1st
and some 2nd graders are in the Roots stage. Desired outcomes for Roots are
Oral Language, Phonemic awareness, Word recognition, Fluency, Comprehension
and Writing at the sentence level.
3rd through 6th graders are in the Wings component of SFA. The skills of
Word recognition, Fluency, Writing at the paragraph level and reading
comprehension in both narrative and expository are taught at this level.
Literature books are used instead of a textbook basal. At the Wings level,
book share projects are also expected to be completed. This year, there is
a book share project due every nine weeks. Your child's SFA teacher will
send a letter telling you what the project is, the deadline, and if it is
to
be completed at home or at school.
All students are to read 20 minutes every evening and have someone
responsible sign their book slip.
Success For All? YES! When children are taught at their instruction level,
gains are going to be made, progress will be seen, and each child will show
success!
